Food miles is the distance food travels from its production to the consumer and are one of the fastest growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. They are used to asses the impact of food transportation on the environment, specifically, climate change. The recent increase in food miles is believed to be caused by the globalization of trade, the concentration of food supply bases into smaller and fewer districts, and the increase in processed and packaged foods that require the transportation of more ingredients. |
